Construction Safety Week – 2016 Working together to achieve “Zero Accidents” in Hong Kong’s Construction Industry

Hong Kong • 19 April 2016 – The Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council will jointly host the fifth Construction Safety Week in May to promote health and safety in the construction industry. This year’s Construction Safety Week will feature a series of activities, including a Kick-off Ceremony cum Conference, site visits, and the Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme Award Presentation Ceremony. All activities have the aim of further raising awareness of safety and health in the construction industry, and unite practitioners in achieving the goal of zero accidents on construction sites.

Over the past four years, Construction Safety Week has introduced various initiatives and measures to encourage practitioners to demonstrate “Safety Leadership”. This year, the campaign will be held from 25 to 27 May 2016 with the theme “Design for Safety”. This theme is meant to promote the creation of a “zero accident” environment through construction design and management.

The Construction Safety Week 2016 begins with a Kick-off Ceremony cum Conference, which is a platform for local and overseas experts to share their views on design for safety, in particular the design of temporary works, with industry practitioners. There will also be visits to construction sites that have outstanding safety performance as well as an Award Presentation Ceremony for the 22nd Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme.

Last year, a tailor-made smartphone application, the Construction Safety App, was launched to provide industry practitioners with various kinds of safety information. New features have been added to the App this year in response to users’ feedback. This includes a running text that provides real-time industry updates and a new function that allows users to customise sound playback for weather warning push notifications in the event of inclement weather.

Two award schemes will continue this year, having received overwhelming support in past years, namely:

  • The Zero Accident Ambassador Award – This scheme aims to recognise workers’ commitment to working towards a zero-accident site environment and encourages them and their peers to further their efforts. Construction workers with outstanding performance in promoting construction safety will be nominated as Zero Accident Ambassadors; and

  • The Innovative Safety Initiative Award – Contractors who implemented innovative safety initiatives in the past years are invited to submit entries for the Innovative Safety Initiative Award.

“We are delighted to collaborate with the Construction Industry Council again as part of this meaningful campaign. We are looking forward to seeing how the ‘Design for Safety’ theme will be explored this year. The construction industry plays a crucial role in the development of Hong Kong, and we hope to continue this campaign to achieve our ultimate goal of zero accidents,” a spokesperson for the Development Bureau stated.

“We are glad to see the success and effectiveness of Construction Safety Week over the past four years. Based on a survey conducted with industry practitioners this year, 90% of respondents said Construction Safety Week helped promote safety culture, raise their safety awareness as well as improve their safety behaviour. Through continuous efforts we hope to further unite industry practitioners and reach the goal of zero accidents.” a spokesperson for the Construction Industry Council said.

Construction Safety Week aims to promote zero accidents as well as a caring environment for those who work in the construction industry. Launched in 2012, the campaign has received tremendous support from the industry, including employers, professional institutions, trade associations, and labour unions.
