Hong Kong • 18 September 2017 – The Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council will jointly host the sixth Construction Safety Week in September to promote health and safety in the construction industry. This year’s Construction Safety Week features a wide series of activities, including a Kick-off Ceremony cum Conference, site visits, a Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme Award Presentation Ceremony, as well as a newly introduced Construction Safety Week Carnival. The campaign aims at raising awareness of health and safety in the construction industry and unites practitioners in achieving the goal of zero accidents on construction sites.
This year, Construction Safety Week will be held from 21 to 26 September with the theme “Workers’ Behaviour”. This theme promotes the creation of a “zero accident” environment through drawing construction workers’ attention to manage their own and each other’s behaviour at work.
Construction Safety Week 2017 commences on 21 September with the Kick-off Ceremony cum Conference, which provides a platform for industry experts to share their views on promoting construction safety through workers’ behaviour. There will also be visits to construction sites that demonstrate outstanding safety performance on 25 September and the Award Presentation Ceremony for the 23rd Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme on 26 September.
This year, Construction Safety Week will organise a carnival for the first time. The Construction Safety Week Carnival, which will be held on 23 September at the Macpherson Playground, offers a fun and informative environment for workers and their families to enjoy interactive activities while learning more about construction safety. The public are also welcome to join-in the carnival fun.
The following award schemes will be featured this year, namely:
· Considerate ContractorsSite Award Scheme – This scheme aims to promote considerate attitude as well as good practices in site safety, health and environmental aspects at public works and non-public works construction sites;
· Temporary Works Excellence Award – This newly introduced award aims to recognise excellence of construction professionals at the design and execution of temporary works that contribute to the exemplary performance in safety of the projects; and
· The Zero Accident Ambassador Award – This scheme aims to recognise workers’ commitmentto working towards a zero-accident site environment and encourages them and their peers to further their efforts. Construction workers with outstanding performance in promoting construction safety will be nominated as Zero Accident Ambassadors.
“Construction Safety Week is a meaningful campaign and has been receiving tremendous support from the industry. We hope to promote construction safety with regards to ‘Workers’ Behaviour’ in a fun and memorable way, not only drawing interest from construction workers, but also from their families and the public. Ultimately, we work together towards the goal of achieving zero accidents,” a spokesperson for the Development Bureau stated.

Construction Safety Week aims to promote zero accidents as well as a caring environment for those who work in the construction industry. Launched in 2012, the campaign has received tremendous support from the industry, including employers, professional institutions, trade associations, and labour unions.
