Construction Safety Week 2017

Jointly hosted by the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council, the sixth Construction Safety Week successfully concluded on 26 September 2017. Under the theme “Workers’ Behaviour”, this year’s Construction Safety Week featured a wide series of activities aimed at raising awareness of health and safety in the construction industry and uniting practitioners in achieving the goal of zero accidents at construction sites.

21 September: Kick-off Ceremony cum Conference

The Construction Safety Week Kick-off Ceremony took place on 21 September and was officiated by the Secretary for Development, Mr Michael Wong and the Chairman of the Construction Industry Council (CIC), Mr Chan Ka-kui. After the kick-off ceremony the Construction Safety Week Conference began, which provided a platform for industry experts to share their views on promoting construction safety through workers’ behaviour. The industry experts included Prof Dongping Fang, Chair, School of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua University, China; Dr Raymond Cheung, Chief Assistant Secretary (Works), Development Bureau; Dr Stephen Kong, Engineer, Civil Engineering and Development Department; and Mr Danny Chan, Chief Praise Maker, Appreciation Paragon Limited.

  

On the same day, the Temporary Works Excellence Award Ceremony was also held. This newly introduced award recognises construction professionals at the design and execution of temporary works that contribute to the exemplary safety performance of the projects.

  


23 September: Construction Safety Week Carnival

The Construction Safety Week organised a carnival for the first time at the Macpherson Playground. It offered a fun and informative environment for workers and their families to enjoy interesting and educational game booths while learning more about construction safety.

  

The carnival was officiated by the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Hon Chi-keung, and the Chairman of the CIC, Mr Chan Ka-kui. Construction practitioners and other attending guests were invited to put on yellow or white T shirts and safety helmets to form the world's "Largest Human Image of a Safety Vest", which consisted of 519 participants, to demonstrate the unity of the construction industry in promoting construction safety. The attempt was recognised by Guinness World Records.

  


25 September: Site Visit

Visits to nine construction sites with exemplary safety performances were conducted on 25 September. The visits provided opportunities for industry practitioners to draw upon the sites’ outstanding safety practices.

  


26 September: Award Presentation Ceremony for the 23rd Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme

The Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme aims to promote considerate attitudes as well as good practices in site safety, health and environmental aspects at public works and non-public works construction sites. Forty-nine sites received awards under the scheme this year, with 29 from the public works stream and 20 from the non-public works stream. Construction contractors, supervising teams, site supervisors and workers were commended for their outstanding safety performance.
