Construction Safety Week 2018

The Development Bureau and theConstruction Industry Council jointly hosted the seventh Construction SafetyWeek in May, which featured a number of activities. The event was successfullyconcluded on May 29th. Under the theme “Partnering for Safety Enhancement,”this year’s Construction Safety Week emphasized the key message thatconstruction workers must fulfil their own duties in their respective positions,and work together to create a working environment with “zero accidents”.

 

21 May: Kick-off Ceremony cum Conference

The Construction Safety WeekKick-off Ceremony took place on 21 May and was officiated by Mr. Hon Chi-keung,Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), and Mr. Chan Ka-kui, Chairman ofthe Construction Industry Council (CIC).

The Construction Safety WeekConference following the kick-off ceremony welcomed a number of industryleaders, including Mr. BAE Gye-wan, Director of Gyeonggi Area Office, KoreaOccupational Safety and Health Agency; and Mr. James QUINN, Vice-President, Institutionof Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), United Kingdom to share their viewson promoting construction safety. The morning session was mainly geared towardsgovernment officials from different departments, employers, consultants, aswell as executives from contractors and subcontractors; while the afternoonsession targeted frontline workers, safety officers and site supervisors. Theaim of the conference was to glean full support from industry stakeholders, andwork together to achieve the goal of “Zero Accidents” on site.


The organizers alsolaunched the inaugural Safety Video Competition this year, and received almost100 entry submissions from industry stakeholders. The award ceremony took placeon the same day, and lauded the creative approaches demonstrated in promotingconstruction site safety.


24 May: Site Visit

The organisers arranged ten construction sitevisits to showcase exemplary safety performance, which also provided opportunitiesfor industry practitioners to learn from these role models.


27 May: Construction Safety Week Carnival 2018

Following the successful debut last year, the Construction Safety Week Carnival was heldagain on May 27th at The Vessel, alongside the Kwun Tong Promenade,to continue promoting construction safety through a fun yet educationalapproach. The enthusiasm by the attendees had not faltered under the hotweather, as evidenced by over 7,000 admissions recorded throughout the day.There were 30 entertaining and educational game booths in the carnival, such asthe inflatable climbing wall and the mini-excavator, which allowed participantsto experience a daily work of construction workers.



The carnival was officiated by Mr. Hon Chi-keung, PermanentSecretary for Development (Works), and Ir. Dr. Pang Yat Bond, Derrick, Chairpersonof Committee on Construction Safety, Construction Industry Council. Lyson Sze,a renowned local professional freestyle footballer, also performed on stagealong with his team.


29 May: Award PresentationCeremony for the 24th Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme 

The Considerate ContractorsSite Award Scheme aims to commend workers and contractors who performedoutstandingly over the past year, having promoted and implemented site safety, aswell as having embodied considerate attitudes, and best practices in sitesafety, health and environmental aspects.  There were a total of 327 participatingprojects this year, where 52 sites received awards – 28 of which were from the publicworks stream, while 24 from the non-public works stream. 

Hundreds of construction industry practitionerswere gathered at the ceremony to celebrate outstanding industry projects.  Furthermore, a team of construction industry workersperformed on stage using construction equipment as percussive instruments. Theshow brought the atmosphere to a climax, and marked a perfect ending for thenine-day Construction Safety Week 2018 event.
