Construction Safety Week 2014 coming soon
with new programmes engaging the industry to achieve zero accidents

HONG KONG – 8 May, 2014 – Jointly organised by the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council, the third Construction Safety Week will take place this year with various new programmes such as a morning Qigong exercise session and creating a collage of cheerful smiley faces to unite the industry to achieve the goal of zero accidents on construction sites.

The Construction Safety Week 2014 will be held from May 26 to 29. The launch activity, the Zero Accident Flag Presentation Ceremony, will be held at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. A morning session of Qigong exercises, a practice of aligning breath and movement, will take place on-site to promote safety and health in construction through a healthy lifestyle among workers. The highlight will be the Flag Presentation Ceremony, in which a flag will be presented to safety leaders of all levels in the industry to encourage leadership at every echelon for developing a safety culture.

Another new activity in this year’s campaign is creating a photo collage of cheerful smiley faces. Industry practitioners will be invited to take photos with their peers and family to record happy moments. These precious photos will be collected through the Construction Safety Week website to form a collage of the Construction Safety Week’s logo, which will be displayed at the Flag Presentation Ceremony.

“The Construction Safety Week was warmly received in the past two years. This year, we will introduce a host of new programmes to further spread the construction safety message and gather the industry practitioners together to realise the goal of zero accidents,” a spokesman for the Development Bureau said.

A series of events will be held throughout the Construction Safety Week. They include a conference for experience sharing and reflection among industry practitioners, site visits and an award presentation ceremony of the 20th ConsiderateContractors Site Award Scheme.

The following three award schemes introduced last year will also be run this year in view of the overwhelming support:

    • Safety Pal –This programme aims to enhance the safety awareness of frontline supervisors and workers. Safety Pals will be eligible to join a series of safety-promoting activities and receive regular construction safety messages.

    • Zero Accident Ambassador Award – The scheme aims to recognise workers’ commitment to working towards a zero-accident site environment and to encourage them as well as their peers to continue their efforts. Construction workers with outstanding performance in promoting construction safety will be nominated as Zero Accident Ambassadors.

    • Innovative Safety Initiative Award– Contractors who implemented innovative safety initiatives in 2013 are invited to submit entries for the Innovative Safety Initiative Award 2014.

“Last year, we received an overwhelming response from the construction industry with a record number of participants,“ said a Construction Industry Council spokesperson. “We look forward to working closely with the Development Bureau again on this industry campaign, and hope to make it an even more influential one so as to further reinforce the theme of Zero Accident.”

The Construction Safety Week aims to promote an accident-free site environment and a caring culture in the construction industry. Launched in 2012, the campaign has received tremendous support from the industry including employers, professional institutions, trade associations and labour unions.
